Kratos and Atreus arrive in Svartalfheim to track down Tyr in the Quest for Tyr, God of War Ragnarök’s main story quest that sends you through Nidavellir and into the Jarnsmida Pitmines. There are plenty of puzzles standing between you and Tyr. Here’s how to solve every one of them and finish the quest, step by step.

Journey to Nidavellir
Nidavellir is a dwarven settlement in Svartalfheim, and Kratos and Atreus need to reach it by boat. Not far from where you arrive, a boat sits near the shore at the Aurvangar Wetlands. Follow Atreus to it; it’s tied up, and he’ll cut it loose. After the fight, carry the boat to the water and board it. Follow the stream until a wheel blocks the channel, then use the nearby dock to get on land.
A geyser blocks your path here. Throw your axe at it to freeze it, cross over, then recall the axe.
On the other side, climb up and around the structure to the very top, where a zipline waits at the far end.
After another fight, look for a long metal chain to climb. A small yellow treasure chest sits at the top, and from up here you can reach the wheel blocking the channel below. Hit the red symbol with your blades and pull the wheel away.
Head back down and continue by boat. Get through a narrow passage by interacting with it, then land again on the other side. After the fight, find a geyser dome, open it, freeze it as before, and cross.
Climb all the way up here and take a look at the structure. Another geyser sits a bit higher; freeze it, and the once-capped geyser below will spew higher and open the blocked gate. Head back to the boat and carry on. Stay to the right, and you’ll hit another blocked path. Land at the beach again.
A small creature lurks near a tent here, vanishing into the ground whenever you try to hit it. Approach from behind instead, using the gap that lets you cross onto a platform behind it, and kill it from there. Continue toward your next obstacle.
A heavy weight blocks the way. Look up at where it hangs; there’s a shield you can destroy up there. Throw your axe to smash it.
Cross to the other side and pull down a chain to open the first part of the barricade. Cross the large gap to the left, freezing another geyser to get across, then fight your way through and uncap a second geyser with your blades.
Freeze the other geyser too, the one just underneath the block you froze earlier. With that geyser still frozen, head to where you uncapped the second one. There’s a shield just above the big block; recall your axe and destroy it quickly. Climb on top of the block, then freeze the uncapped geyser to ride it up like an elevator.
At the top, next to a large red glowing chest, you’ll find the Artifact: Kvasir’s Poems – The Sunrise of Nothingness. There’s also another chain here; pull it to fully open the barrier. Return to the boat, steer through the cave ahead, and Nidavellir will be waiting on the other side.
Explore Nidavellir
Dock at the blue flag in the center of Nidavellir and head up the path until you reach Sindri and his shop. Atreus gains the ability to break through barriers of green rock and metal here; use it on the sewage gate, work your way through the sewers, and exit on the other side. Tell Atreus to destroy the cart full of green ore blocking the way.
Push through here, moving the ordinary cart aside when Kratos reaches it, then enter the building at the end of the road and talk to Raeb. He’ll hand you the Favours Quest: In Service of Asgard, which tasks you with destroying three mines.
Boat to Durlin’s Office
Sindri meets you at the exit and gives you a compass, adding a HUD marker to guide you from here on. Head down to the water and board a boat. Follow the stream and stay left when you’re given the choice between destroying the mines or heading to Durlin’s Office to continue the story. Dock and enter the building, then exit Durlin’s Office toward the port, where a long fight awaits.
Reach the Front of the Broken Train
You’ll exit automatically at the Forge. Head down and follow Atreus to the waterside, where a dead Dreki lies. Get close enough and a live one attacks.
After the fight, leave through the gap on the far side and make your way toward the tracks in the distance. You’ll find a derailed train that needs repairing, right after clearing out a Wretches nest. Fixing it is a little fiddly since Atreus tends to mix up left and right; just follow the direction he’s physically pointing, regardless of what he says, and move the train that way. Board it once it’s fixed and ride it to the mines.
Search the Mines for Tyr
Reach the Jarnsmida Pitmines
After a short fight aboard the train, you’ll arrive at the mines. Take the path down and tell Atreus to shoot the cart of green ore ahead; this is the way through. At the end of the wooden path, piles of ore block the route, but they sit near burning oil lamps, so destroying the lamps clears the passage. Head into the mine through here and exit on the other side at the Jarnsmida Pitmines.
Solve the Water Wheel and Crane Puzzles
Make your way down to the water wheel and throw your axe at the aqueduct above to freeze it. The crane will drop, letting you swing across on the red shield hanging from it.
The large chest on the far side is part of a separate collectible puzzle, covered elsewhere in the God of War Hub. For now, follow the path to the right of it, cross the gap, and you’ll reach another puzzle structure.
Behind you is a wooden board with markings; lift Atreus up here so he can help. Tell him to pull the lever, which activates a flap over the gap that swings up and down.
Freeze the flap while it’s horizontal by throwing your axe at the turning cog, then cross. Underneath the big rock cube, raise the second cube by hitting the red shield with your blades so the water fountain flips and lifts the block, letting you jump the gap.
Cross the Rock Cube Puzzle to Reach Sindri
Once across, turn back and look at the rock cube you just raised; it has climbing markings on it. Lower it again by freezing the water spout with your axe, and climb it once it drops.
From the top, recall your axe and the cube will rise again, bringing you to a gate that separates you from Atreus. Help him lift it, then continue together. Further up, a cart blocks the way; move it aside, and Sindri will greet you and hand over some lamps for the dark ahead. After a fight, follow Atreus into the mine.
Fight the Bergsra Mother and Continue by Boat
Follow the path until Atreus calls it a dead end. Look for a ledge to drop down from, and once down there, tell Atreus to shoot the green pile blocking the way through.
This leads into a cave fight against a Bergsra Mother. Afterward, find a stream and board a boat. After a long ride you’ll pass Sindri and his shop again; leave him be for now. Not far ahead is another large gap with a water puzzle: tell Atreus to shoot the green rocks blocking the aqueduct, then throw your axe where the upper and lower aqueducts cross. Water flows into the lower one, raising the crane so you can swing across on your blades.
Cross the Aqueduct Gap to the Elevator
Open the gate on the far side and step into a room with a large red glowing chest and only one way out. Tell Atreus to clear the green ore blocking the passage, leave through it, and jump the stream to the other side, where a fight is waiting.
Afterward, follow Atreus up to the next puzzle. Freeze the water above the wheel to the left, and the crane will rise, letting you swing across.
In front of the elevator door, recall your axe and use your blades on the spot where the water was frozen on the right, using the red shield there. On the left is another aqueduct; freeze that one too. The elevator will lower to your level. Open the door behind you, step in, and recall your axe to ride it up.
Get Your First Relic and Fix the Zipline
At the top, you can open a yellow glowing chest and a large door. Beyond it is a chaotic scene and another fight. Look for a dead dwarf wedged in a gap and interact with him to pick up your first relic. Squeeze through, follow Atreus and the tracks up as far as they go, then look up: a large basket of green ore hangs from a framework overhead. Tell Atreus to shoot it down so you can swing across.
Keep following the path up to a broken zipline. Look down and you’ll spot the cause: a pile of green ore sitting on the rope. Tell Atreus to clear it, then fix the zipline before riding it down.
Solve the Final Water Puzzle and Find Tyr
Another water puzzle awaits here. Ignore the cranes and aqueducts for a moment; instead, turn around and jump the gap behind you. Lift Atreus up so he can reach the lever on the aqueduct to the left, but before telling him to use it, freeze the aqueduct just ahead of the wheel.
Now have Atreus pull the lever. This sends chunks of green ore down the water to form a barrier just in front of the ice. Recall your axe and the block will hold. Move to the aqueduct on the right and freeze the water there too.
The crane rises, letting you swing across. From the platform, tell Atreus to clear the green ore blocking the aqueduct, and you’ll be carried straight to the door.
Atreus meets you there. Go through together, past a large red glowing chest, and follow a crawlspace to a final gate. Tell Atreus to shoot all four gate hinges, fight off the ambush that follows, and pull the gate open. Tyr is waiting on the other side. After the cutscene, you’re separated from both Tyr and Atreus.
