Live Bait Walkthrough – The Blood of Dawnwalker

Live Bait is an optional side quest in the Prologue of The Blood of Dawnwalker. You can finish it before Withering Away, or slot it in while your father is waiting during Like Father, Like Son. It costs you one time block at minimum, two if you play tag with the little ones, and it ends with the first friendly non-human you meet in the game.

Yanna, Coens sister, is standing in the road just south of your family home. Talk to her to start Live Bait. She has been told to take the younger children fishing and she is not keen on baiting the hooks herself, which is where you come in.

Mission Text:
“Dad told Yanna and the kids to go catch some trout. Maybe I should help them out? Yanna hates baiting the hooks. – I agreed to go fishing with my siblings. First, we need to get down to the river.”

Follow your siblings down towards the river. Partway there, the younger two, Mirto and Lunka, get bored and refuse to walk any further. You can either spend a time block playing tag with them, or be firm and carry on without losing the time.

Playing Tag with Mirto and Lunka

Playing tag costs you one time block. Catch both Mirto and Lunka to move on to the fishing part of the quest. It is worth the block.

Straight after the game Coen has a long coughing fit, and the conversation that follows reveals that he used to work the mines alongside his father and picked the cough up down there. Skip the game and you skip that piece of his backstory entirely.

Mission Text:
“Dad said he hid the rods in the reeds by the river. I’ve got to find them.”

Trigger Focus Mode when you reach the reeds and the rods light up straight away. They are not hidden well at all, tucked into the bush right next to the water, so you can also just walk up and grab them if you prefer.

Mission Text:
“The kids won’t have the patience to hold the rods – so I’d better set them up by the river.”

There are four mounds along the bank. Interact with each one to plant a rod in it.

Mission Text:
“Before we can start fishing, I need to bait the hooks.”

Interact with any one of the four rods. You only need to bait a single hook to trigger the scene, and doing so consumes one time block.

Talking to Lunka About Their Mother

Lunka starts crying while you are sitting by the water. If you ask her whether she is upset about something else, the conversation opens up and both younger siblings start asking about their sick mother. It is the longer version of the scene and the only place in the quest where the children talk about her directly, so take that option if you want the full exchange.

Uriash Steps In

A soldier turns up next and threatens to throw the whole group in the dungeon. How you answer him does not change the outcome, so pick whichever line fits the Coen you are playing.

Before it can escalate, Uriash arrives. He is a horned non-human, and he defuses the situation and helps the children out. For Lunka in particular it is the moment she learns that not every monster is something to be afraid of, and it is your first proper introduction to a character you will run into again.
