Note 1 – Bartolomeo’s Challenge

The mystery note “Bartolomeo’s Challenge” can be found in the large tent at the back of the Wat Mahathat fascist camp. It features a cipher machine similar to the one Indiana Jones has encountered and used in the Himalayas.

Description
“Message in Italian challenging a soldier to solve a cipher.”

To find the Footlocker code, check Bartolomeo’s Challenge note. He left Indy a hint: the code is JHHS.

There are four code wheels to insert into the cipher machine. Keep in mind that not every wheel includes every letter. Before placing a wheel into the machine, you can check which letters it contains. Your goal is to set up the cipher machine to write JHHS.

There are two challenges here: First, there are two code wheels with an “H,” meaning they could both fit in the center positions but produce different results. Second, the code wheel for the last position doesn’t have a regular “S.” Instead, it has a double “S,” also known as an “Eszett” in German, which looks like this: ß.

Since ß is not an S, the codeword you’ll end up with is BIEP, which isn’t on the list. However, there is one word on the list that matches the first three letters—BIER, with the code 4134. Enter this code into the lockbox, and it will open.

It contains money and the book “Street Scrapper III”.

There is a follow-up mystery quest called “A Game of Wits” in Voss’ camp to the northeast.
