Side Story Quest Text:
“During the Oldest House lockdown, it seems like FBC researchers were running experiments in facilities across the city. And whatever they were working on may have gotten out of hand… It needs to be shut down.”

The side story starts as soon as you discover any of the six Testing Facilities, and you can shut them down in any order. If you can, head to Testing Facility Reade in Downtown first: after the shutdown, its backroom holds the Testing Facility Coordinates, which reveal all other Testing Facilities on the map. From there, pick whichever one is closest.

Two Types of Shutdown Puzzles

Every facility has Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls, and each one uses one of two puzzles.

Soda Dispenser puzzle (Downtown, Evacuation Zone, West Incursion Zone): Carry the five shape-shifting appliances onto the five yellow squares as Soda Dispensers, then pull the lever. The appliance in your hand changes shape every time you cross a straight line on the floor.

Power balancing puzzle (Central, The Park, Unknown Zone): Pull the lever to start a 60-second shutdown. Move power from the blinking, overcharged cubes to the unpowered ones until every station glows green.

Once all six facilities are shut down, the Threshold opens in Testing Facility Dutch in the Unknown Zone.

Central – Find Testing Facility Platt

The entry pipe is at a construction site northeast of the Central Field Office.

Follow the short path through the sewers to Testing Facility Platt.

Central – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. The shutdown takes around 60 seconds, and you have to balance the power by hand or the system shuts itself down early.

Look around before you start: there are two powered cubes and two unpowered ones. Pull the lever, and the powered pillars start to blink frantically. When one blinks, take its power and carry it to a cube without power. Repeat until all the towers turn green.

Pull the lever again to open the backroom with a Power Upgrade box and the Archives collectible Notes From Dr. Puchalski (Impermanence Threshold).

Downtown: Testing Facility Reade

Downtown – Find Testing Facility Reade

Cross over to the Deserted Area east of Downtown from the Lookout Point platform. The building site there is full of Hiss, so defeat them all first. On the ground level, look for a square hole with a pipe leading down to the sewers.

Follow the pipe through the sewers to Testing Facility Reade.

Downtown – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. They say the default state is the Soda Dispenser, and every yellow square needs one before you pull the lever.

There are five yellow squares on the floor and five appliances to carry. Each appliance changes shape every time you cross a straight line on the floor, so bring each one to a square as a Soda Dispenser, like in the screenshot below.

If one won’t turn into a Soda Dispenser for the square you picked, walk across another line or try a different square.

Once all five Soda Dispensers are in place, pull the lever to shut down the facility. The backroom opens with a Large Resource Crate and two Impermanence Threshold Archives collectibles: A Note From Dr. Milbeck’s Cardiologist and the Testing Facility Coordinates.

The Testing Facility Coordinates reveal all other Testing Facilities on the map, so you can pick whichever one is closest next.

Evacuation Zone: Testing Facility Pearl

Evacuation Zone – Find Testing Facility Pearl

The pipe to Testing Facility Pearl is at the Survivalist’s Bunker Fast Travel Door in the south of the Evacuation Zone.

Follow the pipe through the sewers to Testing Facility Pearl.

Evacuation Zone – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. As in Downtown, every yellow square needs a Soda Dispenser before you pull the lever.

Find the five appliances and carry them onto the five squares. Every time you cross a straight yellow line on the floor, the appliance changes shape in this order: Printer, Sink, Fryer, Soda Dispenser.

Once all five Soda Dispensers are in place, pull the lever. The backroom opens with a Power Upgrade box and the Archives collectible Notes From Technician Washland (Impermanence Threshold).

West Incursion Zone: Testing Facility Broadway

West Incursion Zone – Find Testing Facility Broadway

In the south of the West Incursion Zone, use Shift on the Patterned Road to reach the higher rooftops. Look for an empty pizza shop you can enter. Next to it is a dug-out construction hole with a sewer pipe at the bottom.

Follow the pipe into the sewers. You have to defeat the Hiss in the first room to move on. At the end of the sewers is Testing Facility Broadway, with the Archives collectible Dr. Grant’s Voicemail (Impermanence Threshold) on the desk.

West Incursion Zone – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. They say every designated Impermanence area must be set to the default state, the Soda Dispenser, before you operate the lever.

Carry the appliances onto the squares on the floor. They change shape while you carry them, so make sure each one shows the Soda Dispenser, like the one below on the left platform next to the controls.

There are five squares and five appliances: two squares on the same level as the controls and three in the experiment area below, where four of the appliances are. If one won’t turn into a Soda Dispenser for the square you picked, walk across another straight line on the floor or try a different square.

Once all five Soda Dispensers are in place, pull the lever. The back office opens with a Large Resource Crate and the Archives collectible Notes From Dr. Janson (Impermanence Threshold).

The Park: Testing Facility Vesey

The Park – Find Testing Facility Vesey

The pipe to Testing Facility Vesey is in the east of the Park.

Follow the pipe through the sewers. Mold blocks the main route, so take the back route to Testing Facility Vesey.

The Park – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. As in Central, you have to balance the power by hand during the 60-second shutdown.

There are five power stations here: three powered and two unpowered. Note where the powered ones are, then pull the lever. While the shutdown runs, keep moving power away from the blinking stations so they don’t overcharge. You are done when every station glows green.

Pull the lever again to open the backroom with a Large Resource Crate and the Archives collectible Notes From Dr. Roth (Impermanence Threshold).

Unknown Zone: Testing Facility Dutch

The pipe to Testing Facility Dutch is in the center of the Unknown Zone, on the bottom level of the Twisted Rooftops.

Follow the pipe through the sewers to Testing Facility Dutch.

Unknown Zone – How to Shut Down the Experiment

Read the Shutdown Instructions on the desk next to the controls. This is the same power balancing puzzle as in the Park.

There are five power stations: three powered and two unpowered. Pull the lever, then keep moving power away from the blinking stations until all of them glow green.

Hint: Memorize where the powered cores are before you start, or move them around first so you know where they are.

Pull the lever again to open the main gate, with a Large Resource Crate behind it. Testing Facility Dutch is also where the side story continues once all six facilities are shut down.

Go Into the Threshold

Location: Unknown Zone – Testing Facility Dutch
Requirement: All six Testing Facilities shut down

Once every Testing Facility is shut down, the Threshold opens in Testing Facility Dutch in the Unknown Zone.

Go through the main gate that opened after the shutdown and pull the next lever to open the passage. You reach a crossing with Janson and Puchalski written on the floor.

Optional secret room: Go to the end of the unlabelled corridor and destroy the power box there. Then carry the power from the Janson corridor power core to the Puchalski/Washland power core to open a secret room with a loot box.

To complete the side story, listen to Dr. Grant’s Final Report. His body lies on the floor at the end of the Puchalski corridor. This is also the last recording of the Impermanence Threshold Archives collectibles.
