How to Start Deputized in Starfield

After you deal with the GalBank robbers in Job Gone Wrong, Marshal Daniel Blake sends you to meet Ranger Emma Wilcox at The Rock in Akila City if you want to join the Freestar Rangers.

1 – Talk to Emma Wilcox to Start Deputized

Mission Text:
“Marshal Daniel Blake directed me to speak to Ranger Emma Wilcox at the Rock in Akila City if I’m interested in joining the Freestar Rangers.”

Head to The Rock, the tall tower at the center of Akila City, and go inside. Emma Wilcox is sitting at the bar.

2 – Complete a Freestar Ranger Mission

Mission Text:
“As a way of proving my worthiness to join the Freestar Rangers, Ranger Emma Wilcox tasked me with completing a mission from the mission terminal at the Rock in Akila City. She said I could choose any mission I wanted to, and I should report back to her when I complete it.”

Use the Freestar Ranger mission terminal in the same bar. Pick any mission you like and complete it.

3 – Report Back to Emma Wilcox

Mission Text:
“As a way of proving my worthiness to join the Freestar Rangers, Ranger Emma Wilcox tasked me with completing a mission. Now that I’ve done so, I need to report back to Ranger Wilcox.”

Once your mission is done, return to Emma Wilcox at the bar in The Rock. Talk to her, then follow her to Marshal Blake’s office.

4 – Talk to Marshal Blake and Join the Freestar Rangers

Mission Text:
“To join up with the Freestar Rangers, Ranger Emma Wilcox tasked me with completing a mission to prove my worth. I did so, and now I’ve come back to the Rock. I reported to Emma, and she took me to speak to Marshal Blake.”

Emma has given Marshal Blake a heads-up, and he wants a word with you in his office. He makes you a Freestar Ranger Deputy and hands you your Ranger gear.

5 – Travel to Waggoner Farm on Montara Luna

Mission Text:
“I’ve officially joined the Freestar Rangers with the rank of Deputy, and I’ve been assigned to accompany Ranger Emma Wilcox as we investigate a plea for help from a farmer on Montara Luna who claims that someone is trying to steal her land.”

Fly to Montara Luna, which is in the same system as Akila City (Cheyenne), and land at the Waggoner Farm marker.

6 – Talk to Mikaela Waggoner

Mikaela Waggoner runs Waggoner Farm. You find her near the landing pad, in front of the main building.

7 – Find the Ruffians by Examining Their Tracks

Mission Text:
“My first mission as a Freestar Ranger Deputy continues. I traveled to Montara Luna and met a farmer named Mikaela Waggoner who’s being threatened by some men that want to take her farm. Ranger Emma Wilcox and I have set out into the nearby canyons to find them.”

Follow the mission marker to the first set of boot tracks and interact with them.

Follow the marker down into the canyon, where local wildlife attacks you for the first time. Interact with the second set of boot tracks at the bottom of the canyon.

Keep following the marker along a narrow path littered with bags. More wildlife waits ahead, and mines have been placed near the litter, so watch your step. The third set of boot tracks is at the mission marker.

A short distance further on is the fourth set of boot tracks, which unlocks the next objective.

8 – Confront the Ruffians

Further ahead, you smell a campfire and soon run into the ruffians. Talk to their highlighted leader. There is no peaceful option, so the conversation ends in a fight and you have to kill them.

9 – Read the Job’s Done Slate

The ruffian leader carries a slate called Job’s Done. Loot his body, then read the slate in your inventory under Notes.

10 – Talk to Emma Wilcox at the Ruffian Camp

Mission Text:
“My first mission as a Freestar Ranger Deputy continues. Ranger Emma Wilcox and I tracked down and killed some thugs that were threatening a farmer. The thugs turned out to be mercenaries with a ship stolen from the HopeTech factory. I still don’t know who hired them and why.”

After reading the slate, talk to Emma. She is somewhere around the camp.

11 – Return to Mikaela Waggoner to Finish Deputized

Return to Mikaela Waggoner at Waggoner Farm and talk to her. This completes Deputized and starts the next Freestar Collective mission, Where Hope Is Built.
