Starfield Into the Unknown Walkthrough – Temple Eta Puzzle

Tags:

Into the Unknown follows straight on from The Old Neighborhood and starts with Vladimir Sall aboard The Eye. Your artifact planets are assigned at random, so the ones below may not match yours, but every objective plays out the same way.

Mission type: Main mission for Constellation
Quest giver: Sarah Morgan at the Lodge, who sends you to Vladimir Sall
Location: The Eye in orbit of Jemison, two randomly assigned Artifact planets, Procyon III in the Procyon A system, and the Lodge in New Atlantis
Objectives: Talk to Vladimir at The Eye, recover two Artifacts, find Andreja, add the Artifacts to the collection, follow the distortions on Procyon III, clear Temple Eta, then report back
Rewards: XP, two Artifacts, the Anti-Gravity Field power, and Andreja joining you as a companion
Prerequisites: One Small Step
Quest chain: Runs at the same time as The Old Neighborhood and Back to Vectera, and leads into Further Into the Unknown

Vladimir picks your two Artifact planets at random, so the planet names in this guide will not always match the ones in your own playthrough. The steps, the cave layouts and the objectives are identical either way, so follow the mission marker and use the screenshots for reference.

Mission Text:
“Sarah has asked me to go to the Eye, a star station that Constellation owns in orbit of Jemison. I need to meet with Vladimir Sall about finding more Artifacts in the fringes of space.”

The Eye is a space station in the orbit of Jemison, Alpha Centauri, marked with an eye symbol on the starmap. Dock and board, then talk to Vladimir. Hear him out fully, because he gives you both Artifact leads and the heads up about Andreja in the same conversation.

Mission Text:
“Vladimir has given me locations he believes could hold Artifacts. He’s also asked me to be on the lookout for Andreja, another Constellation member, who was following up on the same leads and hasn’t reported back.”

You can visit the two planets in either order. In this playthrough the first lead was Tau Ceti, which sits west of Alpha Centauri on the starmap, with the landing site marked Abandoned Mine on Tau Ceti II.

“Vladimir has given me locations he believes could hold Artifacts. He’s also asked me to be on the lookout for Andreja, another Constellation member, who was following up on the same leads and hasn’t reported back.”

Enter the Deep Cave of the Abandoned Mine through the grey door in the centre of the camp.

Where to Find Andreja

Andreja is waiting just inside, and she is not optional. Talk to her and she joins you for the rest of the mission, then follows the mission marker down the mine with you. She becomes a recruitable companion once the mission is done.

At the very bottom of the mine you will find the Artifact embedded in the rock. Use the cutter to free it, then pick it up.

The second lead was Tau Ceti VIII-B in the same system, with a landing point called Occupied Cave. There is a small camp outside with a couple of dead miners before the entrance.

Head into the cave and work your way to the back, where a path climbs upwards. The layout is genuinely confusing, so use the mission marker and the abandoned camps as waypoints. Cut the Artifact free and pick it up.

Mission Text:
“I’ve found the Artifacts. Time to add them to the collection back at the Lodge.”

Travel back to the Lodge in New Atlantis and add both Artifacts to the collection in the basement. Talk to Matteo afterwards, he is upstairs in the Lodge.

Mission Text:
“Vladimir picked up some data on the Artifacts I just brought back. I should talk to him.”

Fly back up to The Eye in Jemison orbit. Vladimir has picked up a signature that matches one of the Artifacts.

Mission Text:
“There’s a large anomaly on a distant planet that matches the signature of one of the Artifacts. I need to find it.”

Set course for Procyon A, northwest of Alpha Centauri and west of the Sol system on the starmap. Land at the site flagged as the Scanner Anomaly on Procyon III.

Mission Text:
“My scanner is picking up some distortions. I should keep my scanner up and follow the distortions to the source.”

There is no marker waiting for you when you land, so open your hand scanner and turn slowly on the spot. When the scanner ring starts to flicker and warp, you are facing the right way. Walk in that direction and keep the scanner up, because the distortion gets stronger as you close in.

If nothing flickers at all, try walking due east or due west of your landing site, which is where temples usually generate.

“My scanner is picking up some distortions. I should keep my scanner up and follow the distortions to the source.”

Once you are close enough, a marker appears on both the planet map and the scanner. That marker is Temple Eta.

Enter Temple Eta through the long stone corridor between the two high walls.

Inside, gravity drops away and a ring structure turns slowly in the middle of the room. Float up with Y on controller or Spacebar, and down with B or Left Ctrl, then fly through the bright clusters of light as they appear. They spawn at random and can be above, below or behind you, so keep turning. Roughly eight of them will do it, and the rings spin faster with each one until a portal opens in the centre. Drop through the portal to take the power.

The Boost Pack Training skill makes this far quicker, since a short boost covers the distance between clusters in one go.

You’ve received the Power of Anti-Gravity Field:
“Generate a locatlized field of intense low gravity, and behold a plante’s true power.”

Mission Text:
“The anomaly ended up being some kind of temple. I need to return to the Lodge and let everyone know what’s happened.”

Fly back to the Lodge in the Alpha Centauri system and talk to Vladimir.

“The anomaly ended up being some kind of temple. I need to return to the Lodge and let everyone know what’s happened.”

Open the Powers menu and select Anti-Gravity Field, then stand in front of Vladimir and cast it. On an Xbox controller that is LB plus RB by default, so check your bindings if nothing happens. Talk to Vladimir afterwards to finish the mission.

If you have not yet finished The Old Neighborhood and Back to Vectera, pick the dialogue option about following up on the other anomaly to roll straight into Further Into the Unknown.

This mission is one of the buggier main quests in Starfield, and the problems all show up around Procyon III.

No landing site on Procyon III: open the starmap, go to the Missions tab and plot the course from there instead of selecting the planet manually. That usually forces the landing marker to generate.

No quest marker at all: jump to another star system, then travel back to Procyon A. The game often regenerates the missing marker on re-entry.

No distortions after landing: land a second time and watch for two landing sites close together, since only one of them is the mission site. Otherwise walk due east or due west from where you touched down.

Mission will not trigger or will not progress: load a save from before the mission was meant to start and play the sequence through differently. Disabling mods is worth trying first if you use any.
