Starfield In Memoriam – Sarah Morgan Quest and Sona Choice

Tags:

In Memoriam is Sarah Morgan’s companion quest in Starfield, and it only unlocks once her affinity is high enough. This walkthrough covers every objective, all 10 genetags, and what changes depending on what you decide about Sona.

Mission type: Companion mission for Sarah Morgan, listed under Miscellaneous
Quest giver: Sarah Morgan, once her affinity is high enough while she is your active companion
Location: MAST District in New Atlantis (Jemison, Alpha Centauri), Cassiopeia I in the Eta Cassiopeia system, then back to New Atlantis for The Lodge, the Colony War Memorial and the Waterfall Promenade
Objectives: Speak to Admiral Logan, travel to Cassiopeia I, find the Dauntless power cell, read the telemetry data, reach the second crash site, meet Sona, collect 10 genetags, decide whether Sona stays or leaves, return the genetags to Logan, visit the Colony War Memorial and the waterfall
Rewards: XP, credits, the option to romance or stay friends with Sarah, and Sona joining The Lodge if you bring her back
Prerequisites: High Sarah Morgan affinity. There is no story mission gate
Quest chain: Standalone companion quest, unrelated to the Constellation main line, though Sarah needs to be travelling with you to trigger it

Sarah stays locked into your party from the moment the quest starts until it finishes, so you cannot swap her out partway through. Bring a spare Emergency Power Cell if you have one, since it lets you skip the climb in step 5 entirely.

In Memoriam does not appear on your mission list by itself. Set Sarah Morgan as your active companion and raise her affinity until she opens up about her past, which usually takes three to four separate conversations spread across normal play.

Sarah likes choices that support the United Colonies, help people who need it, and bring criminals to justice. She dislikes theft, cruelty and killing friendly NPCs, so keep your notoriety clean. Quicksave before any long dialogue so a Dislike does not cost you progress.

Once her affinity is high enough she brings up the UC Dauntless and asks for your help. Accepting adds In Memoriam to your Miscellaneous missions and points you at New Atlantis.

Mission Text:
“I’ve been asked by Sarah Morgan to help discover the fate of the crew of the UC Dauntless, a ship she commanded and was lost during the Colony War. To begin, we should speak to admiral Logan in New Atlantis , who might have the information we need.”

Head to the MAST District in New Atlantis, on Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system, and go inside the MAST building. Take the elevator to the Central Command / Office of the President / Systems Defense floor, then go through the door marked Central Command.

Admiral Logan is in his own office at the back left of the room. He was Sarah’s commanding officer during the Colony War and he is the only person who can unlock the Dauntless file.

Mission Text:
“After confronting Admiral Logan, Sarah and I have discovered that her crew was lost at a specific site on Cassiopeia I. We should proceed there to begin our investigation into the fate of her crew.”

Open the Starmap and travel to Cassiopeia I in the Eta Cassiopeia system, north west of Alpha Centauri. Land at the Ship icon, which sits next to Sarah’s old campsite.

Mission Text:
“Sarah and I have landed on Cassiopeia I, near the campsite where her own shuttle crashed years ago. I should speak to her to begin investigating how to track down the second crash site, the location of the crew.”

Sarah is waiting for you once you touch down. Talk to her to get the campsite marker.

Mission Text:
“Sarah and I have landed on Cassiopeia I, near the campsite where her own shuttle crashed years ago. I should speak to her to begin investigating how to track down the second crash site, the location of the crew.”

Follow the mission marker to the campsite. This is the wreck of the escape shuttle Sarah used when the Dauntless went down, and she spent roughly a year here before the UC found her. Talk to her once you arrive.

Mission Text:
“The telemetry data for Sarah’s crew’s crash site is within her former shuttle’s wreckage. I’ll need to find an Emergency Power Cell to bring her old computer back online.”

The shuttle computer holds the telemetry data, but it needs power. If you are already carrying an Emergency Power Cell you can install it right away and skip the rest of this step.

Otherwise you need the specific Dauntless Power Cell, the one Sarah used years ago to send a distress signal. Follow the marker up the hill.

Open your scanner and follow the grey blue Fluorine trail to the top of the mountain. The Dauntless Power Cell is waiting at the peak, and a group of hostile fauna will jump you as soon as you pick it up. Clear them out and head back down to the crash site.

Mission Text:
“The telemetry data for Sarah’s crew’s crash site is within her former shuttle’s wreckage. I’ll need to find an Emergency Power Cell to bring her old computer back online.”

Enter the wreck and interact with the empty power cell slot to insert it. The computer comes back online, and you can read the Telemetry Data – Object Beta, which pins down where the second shuttle came down.

Sarah is in the room with you. Talk to her to unlock the new landing site.

Mission Text:
“With the power to Sarah’s old shuttle partially restored, Sarah and I were able to locate the telemetry data and pinpoint her former crew’s crash site. We should return to our ship and proceed there to continue the investigation.”

Board your ship and travel to the second site on Cassiopeia I, also marked Ship on the planet map.

Hostile wildlife guards the area, so clear it before you explore. Sarah realises there were survivors here, and following the trail leads you to the Shuttle Main Cabin. Go inside and you meet Sona, a girl who has grown up alone on this planet.

Mission Text:
“A young girl has turned out to be Sona, the daughter of two of the UC Dauntless’s crew who had her while being marooned on this world. Sona’s told us that all of the crew, including her parents, died and were buried nearby.”

Sona is the daughter of two of the Dauntless crew, born after they were marooned here. Everyone else died and was buried nearby. Speak to Sarah once the conversation with Sona ends.

Mission Text:
“After a short discussion, Sarah has decided to remain with Sona while I retrieve the UC Dauntless’s crew’s genetags from their makeshift graves. We intend to bring the genetags back to MAST to close the book on these lost soldier’s lives.”

Leave the cabin and head for the mission marker. Use your scanner to pick out the suggested path up the hill at the back. A few coralbugs attack along the way before you reach the graveyard.

There are 10 genetags in total. Nine of them hang on intact gravestones, and one gravestone is broken with nothing on it. Collect all nine first.

The moment you pick up the ninth, two Greater Silverfish attack. One of them swallowed the missing tag, so kill it and loot the body for the tenth genetag. There is no way to get that last one without the fight.

Head back to the shuttle and talk to Sarah.

Mission Text:
“Upon returning from the gravesite, I’ve found Sarah and Sona at an impasse. Sona wants to remain behind on her world, while Sarah wishes to bring her back to New Atlantis. I’ll have to decide which option to choose.”

Sarah wants to take Sona back to New Atlantis. Sona wants to stay on the only world she has ever known. The decision is left to you, so talk to Sona and pick one.

Convincing Sona to leave is the better option. Sarah dislikes it if you let her stay behind, and the choice costs you affinity at the exact point in the quest where you are trying to build it. It takes a few dialogue rounds to talk her round, so work through the persuasion options rather than giving up on the first refusal.

If Sona leaves, she moves into The Lodge and becomes the newest member of Constellation. You can visit her there afterwards and she gets a short extra scene in step 15.

If Sona stays, the quest still completes and you can still romance Sarah. Nothing breaks. You simply lose the affinity, skip step 15, and leave a child alone on a planet full of hostile wildlife.

Either way, Sarah meets you at the overlook afterwards and the rest of the quest plays out the same.

Mission Text:
“I’ve decided that Sona should return back to Jemison with us. I should now speak to Sarah before we return to New Atlantis.”

Leave the Shuttle Main Cabin and head to the marker at the overlook. Sarah can take a while to walk over, so give her a moment to arrive before you try to talk to her.

Mission Text:
“After speaking with Sarah, we’ve decided to return to New Atlantis and close the chapter on the fate of the UC Dauntless’s crew by speaking once again to Admiral Logan.”

Fly back to New Atlantis and return to Admiral Logan on the Central Command floor of MAST. Hand over the genetags so the Dauntless crew are formally recorded as recovered.

“After speaking with Sarah, we’ve decided to return to New Atlantis and close the chapter on the fate of the UC Dauntless’s crew by speaking once again to Admiral Logan.

This step only appears if you convinced Sona to leave. Head to The Lodge and find her upstairs to settle her in.

Mission Text:
“After speaking with Admiral Logan, Sarah’s requested to visit the Colony War Memorial in New Atlantis. I should proceed with her there as soon as I can.”

The Colony War Memorial stands in front of the MAST building. Walk over with Sarah and talk to her once she is in position so she can pay her respects.

Mission Text:
“After speaking with Sarah at the Colony War Memorial in New Atlantis, she’s suggested we speak about something of a more personal nature near the waterfall in New Atlantis.”

The last conversation is the one that decides where you and Sarah stand.

To reach the waterfall, go to the Spaceport and find the elevator behind the Jemison Mercantile shop. It runs to either The Well or the Waterfall Promenade, so take it to the waterfall and meet Sarah at the marker.

Choosing friendship closes the quest there. Choosing romance starts the relationship and opens the commitment path with Sarah later on. Either choice completes In Memoriam.

Finishing In Memoriam pays out XP and credits. The real reward is the unlock, though. Completing it is what makes Sarah romanceable and puts the commitment conversation on the table, and bringing Sona back adds her to The Lodge permanently.

Sona will not talk to you at The Lodge. This is the most common one. Complete the Missed Beyond Measure mission, which also takes place at The Lodge, then come back to Sona and the dialogue works again.

The quest marker points nowhere. Switch your tracked mission to something else and switch it back, or quicksave and quickload. If the Cassiopeia I marker is missing entirely, open the Starmap and select Cassiopeia I in the Eta Cassiopeia system manually.

Admiral Logan will not start the conversation. Leave the MAST building, wait a few in-game hours and come back. Logan sometimes needs the cell to reload before his dialogue triggers.

Sarah stops following or disappears mid-quest. Fast travel to your ship and back, which usually pulls her to you. Sarah is locked to your party for the whole quest, so she should never be genuinely gone.
