Starfield Background Checks – Ryujin Stealth Walkthrough

Tags:

Background Checks is the Ryujin Industries mission that follows Top Secrets, and it is the hardest one in the questline. Dalton Fiennes enacts Directive Theta, strips your lift access, hands you a non-lethal weapon and asks you to break into your own company without being seen or killing anyone. This is the full stealth route from Ebbside up to Ularu Chen’s office, plus the Nyx deal that quietly costs a colleague his job if you take it.

After stealing the Project Dominion files in Top Secrets, Masako Imada asks you to speak to Dalton Fiennes about finding the mole inside Ryujin Industries. Head for the Executive Floor to pick the mission up.

Mission Text:
“I need to find Dalton Fiennes in his office on the Executive Floor and see what I can do to help find the mole at Ryujin Industries.”

Follow the mission marker to Dalton Fiennes. He is in the server room below Ularu’s office.

He tells you Directive Theta has been enacted, meaning every employee gets investigated, top brass included. Ularu Chen is the exception. She is the only person capable of covering her tracks from anyone inside the company, so an independent hacker named Nyx has to handle her.

Dalton gives you the Arboron Novablast Disruptor, a non-lethal weapon that knocks targets out instead of killing them, plus ammunition. He asks for two things: do not get detected, and do not kill anyone. He also tells you to leave your companion behind.

If you want a spare, there are more Novablast Disruptors hanging on the wall in the left section of the Ryujin main lobby by Bayu Plaza.

Mission Text:
“I need to meet a person named Nyx at Madame Sauvage’s Place in Neon. He should already know that Directive Theta has been enacted.”

Follow the mission marker to Madame Sauvage’s Place, one level down in Ebbside. Nyx is sitting inside at ground level, next to the computer on the right. He will not hand over the program for free.

You get three options:
Pay 2,500 credits. Fastest, no strings.
Persuade him. Drops the price to 1,000 credits.
Do him a favour. Free, and this is the option this guide follows.

The favour is to run his program on Camden Cho’s computer as well as Ularu’s, while you are inside the building anyway.

Read this before you accept. If you complete the favour, Camden Cho is fired and disappears from the game once Guilty Parties ends, which means you lose his help at the start of the later mission The Key. The workaround players use is to accept the favour and then simply not run the program on Cho’s machine. You still get Nyx’s program for free, there is no penalty, and Cho keeps his job.

If you paid or persuaded instead, skip the Camden Cho part of Step 4.

Mission Text:
“I need to find an alternate way into Ryujin Tower since Dalton said my access to the elevators will be temporarily disabled.”

Leave Madame Sauvage’s and turn left. Follow the long corridor to the staircase at the far end.

Go up the big staircase all the way to the top, where you can push a large red button.

The button swings a shipping container across so you can walk through it to the other side. Mind your footing, the drop is lethal. On the far side there is a red vent that takes you into Ryujin Industries HQ.

Mission Text:
“I need to enter Ryujin Industries and run the program Nyx gave me on Ularu’s and Camden’s computers.”

The Camden objective only appears if you took Nyx’s favour. His office sits on the route to Ularu’s, so both are covered together below.

Before you go in: leave your companion behind, they shoot to kill. Take off your spacesuit if you are wearing one, since it wrecks your stealth rating. Chameleon gear or the Void Form power make this far easier. And if you are spotted or you do kill someone, the mission still completes. The only consequences are a smaller payout and some disapproval from the board, so do not restart over one bad hallway.

Follow the short vent corridor and open the vent at the far end to get inside the building. From there you can climb up into a vent above.

Follow the vent to an open hatch and drop into the room below. There are guards here. Leave the room, then sneak past security or knock them out with the Novablast Disruptor. Follow the marker two levels up. Camden’s office is on this level, Ularu’s is one level higher.

Keep right and you will reach Camden Cho’s office. The door needs a Novice hack. Interact with the computer inside and open the unlocked Rover file. That is the favour done, if you decided to do it. Leave the office and turn right, where another door opens easily into a maintenance room with vent access.

Open the vent and go inside, then look up. There is a vent opening you can climb. Follow it to the top and climb again.

At the end of this vent you can drop into a room. Open the door and deal with the guards. It is an open surveillance room across two floors. Take the stairs to the second floor, where a computer behind a Novice lock lets you shut down the robot units. Turning them off makes the next section far easier.

You can now cross the hall, though the human guards are still active. Once across, jump on top of the fridge to open the vent and climb in.

Follow the vent to the far end and open it to come out above the Executive Office Lobby. Drop down and go up to Ularu’s office. Interact with her computer and open the “Rover” folder to run the program.

Mission Text:
“Now that I’ve finished running Nyx’s program, I should leave Ryujin Tower and return to him at his apartment.”

Ularu’s office has a vent hatch in the ceiling. Climb one of the shelf units and open it. That vent leads straight out to the Neon rooftop. From the roof you can take the lift down, or just jump and let your boost pack handle the landing.

Mission Text:
“Now that I’ve finished running Nyx’s program, I should leave Ryujin Tower and return to him at his apartment.”

Follow the marker across Neon to Nyx’s apartment. Go in and talk to him, then wait while he decrypts the data. Talk to him again and he hands the slate back for Dalton. If you press him, he will tell you upfront that it looks bad for Imogene.

Mission Text:
“I have the data that Dalton wanted as part of Directive Theta. I need to return to him at Ryujin Tower”

Head back to Neon Core and into Ryujin Tower, this time through the front door with your lift access restored. Go up to the Executive Offices and hand Dalton the slate.

He reads it, spots that someone has been accessing Ularu’s files remotely, and concludes Imogene is the leak to Infinity LTD. He wants to question her himself and sends you to escort her from her office, with instructions to deal with her if she runs.

Agreeing ends the mission and starts Guilty Parties.

Completing the mission gives you XP and credits, and you keep the Arboron Novablast Disruptor. Your payout is reduced if you were detected or killed guards on the way in.

Guilty Parties unlocks as soon as you agree to go and fetch Imogene.

Background Checks never starts after Top Secrets. The most reported problem with this mission. Usually caused by killing Ryujin guards earlier in the questline. Wait 24 in-game hours and re-enter Ryujin Tower first, and if that fails, reload a save from before the guards died.

You are permanently flagged as trespassing. Leave the building entirely, wait, then re-enter through the Ebbside vent route rather than the lifts.

The lift will not take you to the Executive Level. Expected during this mission. Dalton disables your access on purpose, so use the Step 3 route instead.

Stuck in the vents or the marker points through a wall. Drop back to the last room, wait a few seconds for the marker to update, then re-enter.

Camden Cho’s objective will not clear. If you paid or persuaded Nyx, this objective never appears. If it appears and stays stuck, the Rover file has to be opened from inside the folder on his terminal, not just the terminal itself.

Guards go hostile on sight even while crouched. Take off your spacesuit. Wearing one tanks your stealth rating indoors.
