The Firebrand Walkthrough – Blood of Dawnwalker

The Firebrand is the only quest besides Smoke and Ashes waiting in Laslea after you wake up in Anca’s house at the end of Bad Blood. It begins with a traitor mark on Vladimir’s door and leads through the miller’s smuggling operation to Stoneward Post, where the miller turns out to be Mert himself. Arriving at the mill costs one time slot, and breaking him out at night rather than talking your way in during the day saves three or four more.

Quest Cost
Time Slots Used
1
Charged on arrival at Mert’s Mill, before you get any say in what happens next.
Daytime Route
3
1 for the overseer to open the prison and 2 for the talk with Mert. He tells you to come back at night anyway.
Optional Side Trip
1
Only for the angry woman by the entrance, who points you at the merchant selling prisoners belongings.
Night Route
0
Break in through the watchtower and free Mert yourself. The whole quest stays at one time slot.

Night route: 1 time slot in total. Day route: 4 to 5, and Mert sends you away to come back after dark anyway.

This quest starts automatically when approaching Vladimir’s house in the center of Laslea after separating from Anca in the Quest Smoke and Ashes.

Mission Text:
“The manumits. I’ve heard this name before – they are a group of rebels who challenge Bencis’s rule in the valley. Elusive and secretive, they won’t be easy to find… But if I manage to do it, perhaps we can join forces against a common enemy. – I know Vlad joined the manumits. Maybe I can find some clues in his hut that will lead me to them.”

There is a traitor mark to investigate by the entrance. Inside, use Focus mode to distinguish between loot (white) and story related items (yellow).

Investigate all yellow items:
-> A green coat on the floor
-> Half-burnt letter from C (on the wood pile near the fire)
-> Half-burnt letter from M. (in the fire)
-> Burnt paper on the floor

In the next room investigate the red stain on the floor and the flour sack. Investigate the flour sack. Rotate it to look inside. The flour is riddles with silver arrowheads. Also look at the mark.

If you have killed Vlad in Bad Blood, you can loot him. Amongst his possessions is a letter, where “flour” is stressed out.

Mission Text:
“It appears that the miller has been smuggling contraband for the manumits. I need to speak with him about this.”

The mill is quite far away in the south of Laslea. You have to complete Smoke and Ashes before continuing.

Going to the mill consumes one time slot on arrival, where a cutscene starts with Coen talking to Renna. She will ask him to fix the cart.

› camzillasmom.com

If you refuse to fix the cart, the soldiers inside the mill are alerted and come out, leaving Coen no choice but to fight them. Fix the cart instead and the pair talk by the cart rather than the shed. The conversation itself is identical either way.

Renna is distraught if you chose to fight the soldiers. They took her husband Mert, and she is sure they will kill him. Coen can answer reassuringly or hesitantly, and neither changes anything. The quest marker then moves to the military camp to the west.

Rewards

Reward:
75 XP

Loot:
Only when fighting the soldiers.

3 – Go to Stoneward Post

Mission Text:
“Soldiers are holding captured manumits at Stoneward Post. If I speak with the rebels there, I may learn where to find their leader.”

Stoneward Post is southwest of Mert’s Mill, and the miller the quest keeps pointing you towards is Mert himself. There are two ways in. Walking through the gate in daylight costs three more time slots before you even get a proper conversation, and Mert then tells you to come back at night regardless. Breaking in after dark costs nothing extra, so the night route below is the one to take if you care about your time slots.

At Day

Approach the entrance gate of Stoneward Post, where you can state that you want to visit a prisoner, that you have a message for the commander or you want to enlist.

› camzillasmom.com

All three answers get you through the gate. Say you want to enlist and you also keep your weapons.

Speak to the Angry Woman/Merchant

› camzillasmom.com

Before you see the overseer, you can spend an extra time slot on the angry woman by the entrance. She tells you the merchant at Stoneward Post is selling the prisoners’ belongings. Visit him if you want the rest of the story.

Ask him about the missing belongings and threaten to take it to the commander, and he spills everything.

Talk to the Commander

The commander is at the tent on the other side of the camp. Tell him what the merchant said and he lets you speak to the prisoner as a reward.

Speak to the Overseer

Now you can speak to the overseer inside the tower, which costs one time slot. He opens the door to the prison, and the talk with Mert costs two more if you pick the option that Mert will be sick. The guard leaves and the two of you can talk.

Mert gives Coen exactly the same information he gives on the night route. You can then offer to come back for him later, get him out now, or leave him there. Either way he tells Coen to return at night, so going in after dark from the start saves both time slots and real playing time.

At Night

The easiest way in is the watchtower at the top of Stoneward Post. Run up the tower and drop down inside to fight Friedo, the overseer waiting there.

4 – Search the Guard Post for Any Rebel Allies

With the commander down, the guard post is yours to search for the captured manumits.

The prison keychain hangs on the shelf in the same room as the commander, right where you dropped in.

› camzillasmom.com

Use the keychain on the locked door in that room to reach the prison.

There is one more guard to defeat downstairs. Once he is down you can talk to Mert, having reached him without spending the two time slots the miller during the day would have cost.
