“Mantis” is the the first Miscellaneous Starfield Mission that you come across when you just follow the main Constellation missions from the start. It’s high level for someone new, but if you like the challenge, the reward is a fancy spacesuit and a new ship!
It starts with the Constellation Mission “THE OLD NEIGHBORHOOD“, where you have to enter a Staryard with plenty of dead Spacers. One of them is carrying a note called “Secret Outpost!”. Pick it up and you will have the “Mantis” Mission in your log.
1. READ THE SECRET OUTPOST SLATE
Mission text:
“I found a note about a Secret Outpost on a dead Spacer. Might be worth a read.”
Read the note. It’s in your inventory under “Notes”.
2. GO TO THE SECRET OUTPOST AT DENEBOLA I-B
Mission text:
“A dead Spacer had a note about a Secret Outpost on Denebola I-b wit a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” I should investigate.”
Fly to Denebola I-b. It’s northeast of Alpha Centauri in the Denebola System. Land at the “Secret Outpost” location.
3. EXPLORE THE LAIR OF THE MANTIS
Mission text:
“I landed on Denebola I-b and a Spacer warned me to leave the “Lair of the Mantis” before he attacked me. Mantis? Lair? There’s a mystery here.”
Of course, I didn’t listen to the Spacer’s warning to get out of here and made my way towards the mission marker to the Lair of the Mantis. Get rid of the welcoming committee and enter the compound. Follow the path down to the mission marker.
4. (OPTIONAL) LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LAIR OF THE MANTIS
Mission text:
“I landed on Denebola I-b and a Spacer warned me to leave the “Lair of the Mantis” before he attacked me. Mantis? Lair? There’s a mystery here.”
While following the mission marker down, there are a couple of files you can pick up:
There is a high level Spacer Vulture that has a file on him called “Leon Voclain – Sic Semper Tyrannis”. When you open your scanner you will see this as Mission Marker.
Nearby there is also a comms system that has an automated message.
Further down is another Spacer Vulture with a “Leon Voclain – Mantis Revealed” file.
Leon is further down on the floor – deceased. He has another recording on him.
Talk to the scared person in the same room as Leon. Livvey. He will tell you that there is a trap ahead with letters on the floor that spell a word.
I went on without Livvey just to hack the computer at the end of the corridor.
If you can’t do that, spell the word TYRANNIS on the floor and hit the button at the end where the door is to get through.
From here on there are no more humanoid enemies at the end of the corridor, you will enter the Lair.
5. CLAIM THE MANTIS’ SPACESUIT
Mission text:
“I arrived at the heart of the Lair of the Mantis. No more traps. This was meant to be for the Mantis’s son, Leon. Instead it’s all mine.”
To claim the suit, enter the cave and turn left into a room with some lockers. In the next room from there is the Mantis Spacesuit on a mannequin.
6. CLAIM THE MANTIS’ STARSHIP
Mission text:
“I arrived at the heart of the Lair of the Mantis. No more traps. This was meant to be for the Mantis’s son, Leon. Instead it’s all mine.”
Go towards the ship. There is a Starship Lift Controls switch. Use it to send the Mantis to the surface.
7. GO TO THE MANTIS’S STARSHIP
Mission text:
“I’ve explored the Lair of the Mantis and found the Mantis’s suit and ship. I pressed a button and raised the ship to the surface, so I should go check that out.”
Follow the mission marker to the exit. There is an elevator you can take. Interact with the computer at the secure door to get through. Now you can exit the Lair.
Go up to the round landing platform. As soon as you reach the ship, the mission is concluded.
