1 – How to Start The Art of Dying

Location: Powisle – the riverbank in the northeast
Unlocks: after The Mermaid City’s Son

The Art of Dying Is a Timed Side Quest
If you advance too far in the main story, you can lose the chance to finish this quest and its follow-up, Horses in the Sky. Don’t put it off.

Once you finish The Mermaid City’s Son and hear your father’s will, travel to the Powisle district. Head to the riverbank in the northeast and walk down to the water. A cutscene starts in which you meet Morana, another Salutor. Afterwards, The Art of Dying is in your journal, together with the observation Vision on the Bank.

Head north along the riverbank to talk to the artist and the two policemen. One of them, Commissioner Pelevin, starts the next quest step.

2 – Follow Commissioner Pelevin’s Thoughts

Location: Powisle – the riverbank, the Artists’ Shack and a backyard in the west
Observations: The Prime Suspect, The Hovel, Message from the Commissioner, Finished Paintings, Expensive Brushes, Dirty Rags, Crumpled Message

Scan the area with Perception. You spot three tracks to follow. One leads back to the riverbank, where you can talk to the Anglers. The police suspect the artist because of his eerie paintings, and the Anglers point you to the Artists’ Shack. Ask them everything you can to get the observations The Prime Suspect and The Hovel.

Now follow the other two red tracks. One leads to the Artists’ Shack in the southeast, the other to a backyard in the west of the map.

2.1 – The Artists’ Shack Investigation

Start with the Artists’ Shack in the southeast. You have to fight some drunks before you can enter. Inside, use Perception, otherwise you won’t find anything. There are four things to examine:

Message from the Commissioner – the message from the policeman on the table to the left
Finished Paintings – the paintings at the back of the room
Expensive Brushes – the brushes on the stool next to the paintings
Dirty Rags – the big piece of cloth on the right side of the room

2.2 – The Backyard Investigation

Leave the Artists’ Shack and head over to the backyard in the west. There is only one thing to investigate here: a crumpled telegram on the floor, which gives you the observation Crumpled Message.

3 – Find the Person with the Flaw That Morana Seeks

Location: Powisle – the riverbank, the jetties and the artist’s easel
Observations: Snuffed Candles, Easel, The Flaw

Return to the riverbank where the artist is and scan the area with Perception. At the end of one of the jetties, you find some candles, which give you the observation Snuffed Candles.

With all the previous observations, you can now Draw a Conclusion: The Fisherman Case. Then go back to the artist, scan the area around him and interact with his easel for the observation Easel. This unlocks the conclusion The Freak from Powisle.

Now you have everything you need to talk to the artist Kajetan again. Wiktor soon sees something red brewing inside him: Morana. This gives you the observation The Flaw, and you can draw the conclusion Queen of the Depths. Just as Wiktor wants to retrieve her, the police arrive and arrest Kajetan.

4 – Do You Get Morana in The Art of Dying?

No. The police arrest Kajetan before Wiktor can retrieve Morana, so she does not join you as a Salutor in this quest. The Art of Dying sets up the hunt for her, and her story continues in the follow-up side quest Horses in the Sky.

5 – What Happens Next: Horses in the Sky

After the cutscene, the side quest The Art of Dying is completed, and the new side quest Horses in the Sky begins right away. Like The Art of Dying, it can be locked if you advance too far in the main story, so tackle it soon.
