Where are the Fish in Dredge? – Location Guide

Marrows – Dredge Fish

The Marrow is the centre island of the map and first location. There are 12 regular fish to catch and 18 aberrations.

1 – Blue Mackerel

“Practically worthless but enough to stave off hunger.”

The best location to find Blue Mackerel is between GREATER MARROW and LITTLE MARROW. Catch it at daytime with a rod or trawl in coastal water.

2 – Cod

“Plentiful and basic.”

Catch the Cod at daytime with a rod or trawl in coastal water. Cod likes the deeper water – the best area to find it is between GRATER MARROW and BLOCKSTONE ISLE.

3 – Arrow Squid

“Rises from the depths at night to feed – or be fed upon.”

The Arrow Squid can be caught at night time with a rod or trawl in coastal water. To catch it is the second task from the fish monger. A pool of Arrow Squid are right in front of GREATER MARROW.

4 – Grey Eel

“A slimy creature, tainted with the silt and muck of the seabed.”

Catch the Grey Eel at day and night time with a rod or trawl in shallow water. It’s one of the fish to be caught in the first task from the fish monger. They can be found in narrow passages or near rocks. Just like the ones in front of the lighthouse.

5 – Gulf Flounder

“A pathetic, cowardly bottom-dwelling fish.”

The Gulf Flounder can be caught at daytime with a rod or trawl in shallow water.

It’s one of the fish to be caught in the first task from the fish monger. Flounder and Cod share locations. If you can’t find Flounder, empty the cod schools around the area first.

6 – Black Grouper

“A short, stocky fish with mottled black colouring. Perfect camouflage in the black waters of night.”

Catch the Black Grouper at night time with a rod or trawl in shallow water.

7 – Stingray

“Good eating but requires careful preparation.”

The Stingray can be caught at day or night with a rod in shallow water.

8 – Sailfish

“Impossibly quick, but the bill and sail don’t sell for much.”

The Sailfish can be caught in the deeper, oceanic outskirts of THE MARROW at daytime by rod or trawl.

9 – Bronze Whaler

“A beautiful coloured, but deadly predator.”

Catch the Bronze Whaler at daytime with a rod or trawl in deep, oceanic water.

There are two Bronze Whaler pools around GREATER MARROW. But there are also some more around the island east of BLACKSTONE ISLE:

10 – Blacktip Reef Shark

“Usually placid during the day, these predators enter a fenzied hunt when the sun sets.”

The Blacktip Reef Shark can be caught at night time with a rod or trawl in deep, oceanic water.

To catch it is a bit more difficult since for the oceanic type you have to get further out. There is a fishing spot not far from GREATER MARROW in the direction of BLACKSTONE ISLE. I got my aberration after the second respawn of this spot:

11 – Common Crab

“A crusty carapace and clicking claws. Caught in a cage close to the coast.”

Catch a Common Crab in a pot in a depth of 0 – 25 meters.

Select the pot in the round menu and drop it when you see the indicator left of the selected pot saying that there are “Plenty of Crab”. All you need to remember now is where you dropped it and to come back to empty the pot.

12 – Fiddler Crab

“A relatively normal sized crab with a preposterously large claw. The claw can grip with incredible strength, but the arm is fragile and can be snapped off with ease.”

Catch a Fiddler Crab in a pot in a depth of 0 – 10 meters.
Catch it the same way as any other “Pot” creatures.

Gale Cliffs – Dredge Fish

Gale Cliffs is in the south east of the map and the second location you get to in the story. There are 11 regular fish to catch and 11 aberrations.

13 – Oceanic Perch

“Also known as the Rose fish, this brightly coloured little fish has sharp, thorny fins.”

Catch the Oceanic Perch at daytime with a rod or trawl in coastal water.

The best location to find the Oceanic Perch is in the waters just next to INGFELL.

14 – Tiger Mackerel

“Slightly more substantial than other mackerel species but harder to catch.”

The Tiger Mackerel can be caught at daytime with a rod or trawl in coastal water.

The best location to find the Oceanic Perch is in the waters between INGFELL and the DUSTY PONTOON.

15 – Black Sea Bass

“The dark bands on its flanks help it camouflage, making this a fearsome night predator – if you’re a small shrimp.”

16 – Stonefish

“This miserable looking creature carries a dangerous amount of venom in its dorsal fins. Handle with care.”

17 – Blackmouth Salmon

“You’ve promises to keep, Blackmouth. And miles to swim before you sleep.”

The Blackmouth Salmon is quite common. If you’re drive your boat along the coast you’ll find a couple of schools. You can find one just in front of THE RUINS.

18 – Conger Eel

“Often found hiding in shipwrecks or cavernous holes during the day, only emerging at night to hunt.”

The Conger Eel can be caught at night with a rod shallow water.

As the encyclopaedia entry suggests the Conger Eel can in fact be found near ship wrecks at night. The easiest way to fish them, drive outside the cliffs. There are a couple of shipwrecks there and you only have to avoid the red fear cloud and not the big red monster fish.

19 – Devil Ray

“Slow moving and slow growing, these rare rays don’t make for particularly good eating.”

Catch the Devil Ray at night with a rod or trawl in oceanic water.

20 – Sturgeon

“A primitive looking fish with hard, spiky plates lined up along its back.”

21 – Wreckfish

“Typically inhabiting caves and shipwrecks, these fish can grow big enough to eat small sharks.”

The Wreckfish is exactly there where its name says: Around Wrecks. Look for underwater wrecks at the outside of the Gale Cliffs and you will find Wreckfish.

22 – Rock Crab

“A popular crab for eating.”

Rock Crabs are caught with a Pot in a depth of 0.0 – 25.0 metres.

23 – Decorator Crab

“Having covered itself in detritus, this creature hardly resembles a crab at all.”

Decorator Crabs are caught with a Pot in a depth of 0.0 – 5.0 metres.

Stellar Basin – Dredge Fish

The Stellar Basin is in the southwest of the map and the third location you get to in the story. There are 16 regular fish to catch and 13 aberrations.

24 – Aurora Jellyfish

“Illuminating the netherworld with a dull glow. With few predators, this species is spreading rapidly.”

The Aurora Jellyfish can be caught at night with a trawl in coastal water. Just drive along the Stellar Basin’s coast at night and get lucky!

25 – Fangtooth

“Small, with disproportionately large teeth. This slender fish has barely any meat on it.”

Catch the Fangtooth at day and night only with a rod in abyssal water.

You can best spot the glowing abyssal pools at night. At daytime you just have to look more closely. Search in the deep water around Stellar Basin.

26 – Barreleye

“A bizarre creature with a transparent head, housing two tubular eyes that can rotate to point upwards as well as forwards.”

The Barreleye can be caught at day and night only with a rod in abyssal water.

You can best spot the glowing abyssal pools at night. At daytime you just have to look more closely. Search in the deep water around Stellar Basin for white specs below the surface. I was most lucky in the very south of Stellar Basin.

27 – Firefly Squid

“This tiny, sparkling squid spends most of its time in the deep ocean, rising to the surface as it nears the end of its life.”

Catch the Firefly Squid at night with a rod or trawl.

If you want to catch it by rod, look for it at Stellar Basins’ OUTSIDE coastal area.

28 – Red Snapper

“A very popular eating fish, often found hanging around rocky coastal waters and reefs.”

The Red Snapper can be caught during the day with a rod or trawl.

You can catch it best at the very near outside coast of Stellar Basin.

29 – Giant Amphipod

“After spending years scavenging fallen carcasses on the ocean floor, this crustacean has grown extremely large.”

Catch the Giant Amphipod during the day or night with a rod.

Hadal fishing spots are in the centre of Stellar Basin. Don’t forget to turn on the generator at the Research Outpost before fishing.

30 – Loosejaw

“With red searchlights below its eyes, this predator hunts with needle-like teeth. Its stomach can expland to hold prey larger than itself.”

The Loosejaw can be caught during day or night with a rod.

Abyssal fishing spots are in the deep water around Stellar Basin. For the Loosejaw, look for a school of red sparks below surface.

31 – Snailfish

“Adapted to suit the high pressure environment of the deep, this fish begins to implode as it’s dragged to the surface.”

Catch the Snailfish during day or night with a rod.

32 – Coral Grouper

“Commonly found hovering above offshore reefs, this large fish ambushes smaller fish that dare leave the protection of the coral.”

The Coral Grouper can be caught during the day in the shallow water of Stellar Basin’s inside.

34 – Anglerfish

“Dangling a bright lure in front of its open mouth, this deep-sea predator preys on the curious.”

The Anglerfish can be caught during day and night with a rod in the abyssal waters of Stellar Basin.

Abyssal waters are usually the deep waters around the Stellar Basin. One area of anglerfish is by the entrance to the centre of Stellar Basin, where the big ship wreck is:

35 – Barracuda

“This ferocious fish is capable of great bursts of speed, and hunts by biting its prey clean in half.”

Catch the Barracuda during the day with a rod in shallow areas.

You can find it in the shallow waters in and around Stellar Basin quite frequently.

36 – Hammerhead Shark

“A large shark species with an iconic silhouette. These animals have incredibly good eyesight for hunting.”

The Hammerhead Shark can be caught during day and night with a rod out in the ocean around Stellar Basin.

Oh, boy. This aberration was hard to catch. While I was unsuccessful at day, I went out at night, stuck to the coast but looked for those “Aberration Glows” in the ocean. The first night I did this I caught my aberration!

37 – Crown of Thorns

“With many heavily spined arms, this starfish is extremely hardy. It’s a destructive pest and not worth selling.”

Catch the Crown of Thornswith a pot at a depth of 0.0 – 5.0 meters.

The issue here is to have enough room in the pot for it to be able to be caught. Use as big a pot as possible.

38 – Blue Crab

“Also known as Swimmer Crabs, these colourful crabs have two flattened legs that act as paddles, allowing them to swim very effectively.”

Catch the Blue Crab with a pot at a depth of 0.0 – 5.0 meters.

39 – Spiny Lobster

“When threatened, these delicious creatures can rub their long antennae against their body, producing a loud screeching sound.”

Catch the Spiny Lobster with a pot at a depth of 5.0 – 50.0 meters.

Twisted Strand – Dredge Fish

The Twisted Strand is in the north west of the map and the fourth location you get to in the story. There are 8 regular fish to catch and 6 aberrations.

40 – Grey Mullet

“A plain fish, often found in sandy or muddy areas. One of a few species that can survive in brackish water.”

The Grey Mullet can be caught at day and night with a rod and a trawl in coastal water.

41 – Tarpon

“A powerful fish capable of bursts of energy. Well suited to dashing into the mangrove roots to take cover.”

In this case, the “shallow water” is also “mangrove” water. – You can catch the Tarpon anywhere at Twisted Strand. Here’s where I found one:

42 – Sergeant Fish

“Sometimes called the Snook, this drab fish feeds on anything smaller than itself – including juveniles of its own species.”

The Seargeant Fish can only be caught at day with a rod or a trawl in the mangrove.

45 – Catfish

“Equipped with sensing barbels, this large scavenger can detect morsels hidden in the mud.”

46 – Horseshoe Crab

“It looks freakish and unnatural, but this ancient relic of the past sells well.”

47 – Giant Mud Crab

“Highly cannibalistic, these crabs have been known to devour their soft shelled brothers after molting.”

Catch the Giant Mud Crab at a depth of 5.0 – 25.0 meters.

Devil’s Spine – Dredge Fish

The Devil’s Spine is in the north east of the map and the last location you get to in the story. There are 9 regular fish to catch and 6 aberrations.

48 – Armored Searobin

“A small fish with angular armored plates. It has sensory barbs under its body that help it detect prey on the seabed.”

The Armored Searobin can be caught at daytime with a rod and a trawl in shallow water.

“A miserable looking eel, often found hiding in cracks and crevices.”

I found a school between the Charred Pontoon and the Ancient Temple.

50 – Snake Mackerel

“Slender, with dull black eyes and a long snout. A greedy jaw full of long, sharp teeth.”

The Snake Mackerel can be caught all through the day with a rod or a trawl in coastal water.

It is best to drive along the outside coast of the area. I found one here, a bit outside of the Old Ruins.

51 – Pale Skate

“One of the deepest-living species of skate, thought to use hydrothermal vents as incubators for its egg cases.”

Catch the Pale Skate at daytime with a rod or a trawl in volcanic water.

Look for schools with broad, flat looking fish.

52 – Ghost Shark

“Sometimes called the Chimera, this pantom of the deep lacks the teeth of other sharks, instead having three bony grinding plates fused to its skull.”

The Ghost Shark can be caught during day and night in abyssal water.

53 – Frilled Shark

“Considered by many to be a living fossil. Though technically a shark, it swims like an eel, hunting prey with 300 needle-like teeth.”

Catch the Frilled Shark during day and night in volcanic water

Best to look in the centre, more open waters of the area.

54 – Volcano Snail

“This hefty beast lives around hydrothermal vents. It’s ‘foot’ is coated in hundreds of iron plates, which means you could catch this snail with a magnet.”

Catch the Volcano Snail with a pot at the depth of 0.0 – 10.0 meters.

55 – Squat Lobster

“Covered in tiny bristles and spines, this creature is thought to be blind. They process toxins spewed from hydrothermal vents.”

Catch Squat Lobster with a pot at the depth of 0.0 – 25.0 meters.

56 – Spider Crab

“A freakishly huge crab from the depths.”

Catch the Spider Crab with a pot at any depth.

Open Ocean – Dredge Fish

“Open Ocean” fish can be caught in the wide water between the 5 areas. Keep an eye out for glowing schools of aberration so you can catch two fish with one pole!

57 – Anchovy

“The tiny anchovy is harvested in great quantities by man and creature alike – but in their numbers, they will persevere.”

Catch it with an ocean trawl while sailing between the 5 areas on the map.

58 – Scarlet Prawn

“Found in the depths of most oceans. Swarms of them can consume crabs and other small fish.”

Catch it with an ocean trawl while sailing between the 5 areas on the map to find the Anchovy. You can also use a pot.

59 – Blackfin Tuna

“These popular sport fish can prove challenging to catch. Their strong, muscular bodies make for good eating.”

The Blackfin Tune can be caught at any time of the day with a rod or a trawl.

60 – Viperfish

“Hovering in wait above the sea floor, these long fish bite and attempt to swallow whatever random prey they encounter.”

I couldn’t find a school of Viperfish. So I went to any Ocean fish spot, like the one below and threw a bucked of bait. If you use the “Antropy” ability on a school of Viperfish you can get the aberration as well.

61 – Moonfish

“Brilliant, glittering scales give this fish its name. Uniquely, it’s the only known warm-blooded fish.”

I didn’t want to go out at night to fish for it – too creepy. As with the Viperfish above, I went to any Ocean fish spot, like the one below and threw a bucked of bait. If you use the “Antropy” ability on a school of Moonfish you can get the aberration as well.

62 – Rattail

“Found at great depths, these are the most abundant of all deep-sea fish. They gather in large numbers around structures in the deep.”

The Rattail can be caught at any time of the day with a rod.

63 – Ocean Sunfish

“Though this giant is the heaviest known bony fish in the world, its slow, unarmored body is vulnerable to sharp teeth and hungry jaws.”

Catch the Ocean Sunfish at daytime of the day with a rod.

Exotic – Dredge Fish

Exotic fish are special fish that you can see at the surface sometimes. These can be fished like any other school.

64 – Oarfish

“A splendorous, crested sea serpent. The length of its massive body catches the light, shimmering with iridescence.”

The Oarfish can be fished at Gale Cliffs, at any time of day with the rod. You will have to have ABYSSAL equipment with you.

As for the location: Look behind the only waterfall at Gale Cliffs. There is a cave hidden behind it.

65 – Gulper Eel

“Few humans have ever seen this eel. Its great, gulping jaw can open wider than the length of its body.”

The Gulper Eel can be fished at Stellar Basin, at any time of day with the rod. You will have to have HADAL equipment with you.

As for the location: There is a Hadal spot right in front of the Research Outpost.

66 – Goliath Tigerfish

“Fearsomely predatory, this gigantic fish is also one of the most aggressive. Its teeth are so large that they punch holes through the opposing jaw.”

The Goliath Tigerfish’s home is at TWISTED STRAND. In the south is a pool blocked off by a log. Bring some explosives, because the Goliath Tigerfish is swimming behind it.

67 – Coelacanth

“An ancient giant, battered by the years gone by. Its slow eyes swivel and look at you mournfully.”

Coelacanth can be fished at Devil’s Spine, at any time of day with the rod. You will have to have ABYSSAL equipment with you.

From the Charred Pontoon – the Travelling Trader – head north. Just past the ruins there is a barrier you can blow up with Explosives. In this little passage is a fishing spot with the Coelacanth.

Aberrations – Dredge Fish

Aberrations are always to be found in schools of normal fish. Either you see that they are there based on an ominous purple glow above the school or they are fished randomly.

68 – Grotesque Mackerel

“Corrupted scales and bulbous eyes – like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

The Grotesque Mackerel is an aberration of the BLUE MACKEREL.

69 – Lumpy Mackerel

“A writhing mass of lumps, twisting and pulling their way under the scales of their vessel. How long can it have lived like this?”

The Lumpy Mackerel is an aberration of the BLUE MACKEREL.

70 – Many-Eyed Mackerel

“Gill plates dotted with eyeballs. Superfluous but scanning, frantically. All eyes see right through you.”

The Many-Eyed Mackerel is an aberration of the BLUE MACKEREL.

71 – All-Seeing Cod

“Staring outwards, unblinking. Eyes borrowed from a larger being but not the mind to process what it sees.”

The All-Seeing Cod is an aberration of the COD.

72 – Fanged Cod

“Deviantly sharp teeth, with chunks of smaller fish lodged between. A hunger in its eyes.”

The Fanged Cod is an aberration of the COD.

73 – Three-Headed Cod

“Three heads writhe and struggle in unison. Three mouths hang agape, then close shut together. Three lives lived as one. One fate bound to many.”

The Three-Headed Cod is an aberration of the COD.

74 – Brood Squid

“Tentacles sprout from a glowing core inside a gelatinous sac. Other cores lay dormant alongside.”

The Brood Squid is an aberration of the ARROW SQUID.

75 – Snag Squid

“Tasting tongues writhe wildly around sets of yellowed, crooked teeth. The top row are flattened like human molars.”

The Snag Squid is an aberration of the ARROW SQUID.

76 – Barbed Eel

“A spine broken with sharp angles and crooked curves. A row of teeth bent on revenge.”

The Barbed Eel is an aberration of the GREY EEL.

77 – Host Eel

“Numerous glowing shapes flicker and squirm behind a distended ribcage. The rest of the fish is withered and drained.”

The Host Eel is an aberration of the GREY EEL.

78 – Cyclopean Flounder

“A sprawling, jellied mass spills from a single eye socket. What appears to be a dark pupil is in fact the center of an egg.”

The Cyclopean Flounder is an aberration of the GULF FLOUNDER.

79 – Riddled Flounder

“Baggy skin perforated with countless cavities. A singular, shapeless mass spreads underneath.”

The Riddled Flounder is an aberration of the GULF FLOUNDER.

80 – Tusked Grouper

“Pig-like protrude from the mouth of this ravenous brute. With no eyes to speak of, it attacks indiscriminately.”
