General Advice
How to find the Fish
When you arrive in a new area, make sure to discover the fish at the new place first. For this, pick the rod with the longest line in your inventory and the biggest lure you can attach to it. Then cast a long line to all sides, while changing positions with your boat, until you have all five local fish in the Journal. Then, open the journal and click on the “Size Guide” tab to the left. Here you can see what the various sizes look like in the water, so you can find your target much better.
How and When to Use Idle Mode
The title may sound silly, but the Idle Mode can be used strategically, especially when dealing with small fish trophy catches. The small fish, in general, have a ridiculously low trophy weight and can take forever to catch. Why don’t you just equip the Phantom Line Rod and put a Bobber or Deep Bobber to it, and go for lunch or a bathroom break? You can actively start Idle Mode in the Game Menu. It could well be that you have the trophy fish in your inventory when returning to the desk.
“Above Board”, “Over Achiever”, and “Whoa, Nelly” Achievements
The three achievements “Above Board”, “Over Achiever”, and “Whoa, Nelly” require you to catch L, XL, and XXL-sized fish without looking under the water surface. To do that, you have to change the game settings at “Camera” from “Auto Tracking” to “Always Above”. They are bugged at the release of the game and need an update.
Then, look for an area that has easily accessible L, XL, and XXL fish. For me, this is clearly the Old Wreck Bay, Seals Rest, and the Icewater Sea, Safety Cove. At Seals Rest, one can find the Greenland Halibut XL and XXL near the buoy at the far left, and the Dolly Varden L-version is swimming nearby. Equip the Horizon Caster, Heavy Bladebait for the Greenland Halibut, and the Ol’ Blue Baitcaster rod, Heavy Glidebait lure at Safety Cove for the Pink Salmon.
You will notice that you have caught something when the screen starts to move. Be careful while reeling the fish in, since you won’t see it fight. Pay attention to your bending rod. If you are patient, you can just wait until it gets tired all by itself.
Don’t try to fish all in one Place
Not all sizes are in one area. Sometimes you just have to advance and change the region to complete the Journal.
